Falaise was extensively damaged during the Battle of Normandy before being liberated by the Canadian soldiers.  To the east of Falaise is where “The closing of the Falaise Pocket”, the last battle of the Normandy Campaign took place before the surrender of the German forces in Normandy on 21st August 1944.

Chateau Guillaume le Conqueror the birthplace of William the Conqueror in 1027 was also damaged in the bombardments. Today the castle is an amazing museum with a great audio guided tour.

Also worth a visit are Musee Aout 1944 and Automates Avenue.
