Neuville au Plain

Neuville au Plain was the northern defensive line for Ste Mere Eglise on D Day.

Lieutenant Turner B Turnbulls’ stand against 2 german counter attacks was pivotal to the holding of Ste Mere Eglise by the 2nd & 3rd Battalion, 505th Regiment.

Hi small band of paratroopers fought all day to hold their position.  Out of the original 46 paratroopers only 16 survived.

Lieutenant Turner B Turnbull was killed in action on June 7th 1944 in Ste Mere Eglise by artillery fire. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and is buried at Colleville sur Mer American Cemetery.
