D-Day Tours / Battlefield Tours
As part of Operation Overlord on D-Day the British 50th Division landed on Gold Beach, with the 3rd Infantry division landing on Sword Beach.
In the early hours of 6th June 1944 the 6th Airborne division landed east of the Orne canal and river to secure the eastern flank and seize key objectives.
Major Howards 'coup de main' operation – "the capture of Pegasus Bridge", was the first place liberated by allied forces in France on D-Day, followed by the capture of Ranville Bridge (Horsa bridge).
As seen in the Longest Day Major Howards orders were to hold the bridges until relieved by Lord Lovats 1st special service brigade who would then push inland seizing the high ground.
