Utah Beach to Cherbourg

This tour covers the V11 corps advance out of the successful beach head created on D-Day. As the follow on units came ashore the 4th Infantry Division supported by the 82nd Airborne tried to push north and west , towards the main objective Cherbourg. German defence was stubborn. The 101st were battling to secure Carentan, liberated 12th June. V11 corps command decided the change the plans to capture Cherbourg on the 11th June. Cut the peninsula , then head north ,securing our rear. While this as going on the 4th Division fought its way up the east coast. The Germans fell back on Cherbourg overnight 19th/ 20th June.

The tour follows the 4th Infantry division initially and then the 79th Division into Cherbourg. Two Medals of Honour were awarded to the 79th Division during the battle.

V11 corps advances with the 4th Division on the East coast , 79th Division in the centre and the 9th Division on the west flank . Cherbourg was entered on the 27th June and liberated by the 29th June. The harbour destroyed. But 1st Army objective secured..
